Baking with Kids | The Tastiest Way to Teach
There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh baking wafting through the house. And on a wintery weekend, it’s a perfect activity to do with the kids. From mixing to measuring, cutting out to cooling, baking not only teaches kitchen skills and safety, but also maths, reading, team work and sharing. Plus there’s that incredible sense of pride in tasting the treats they’ve made themselves!
While taking hot trays out of the oven is strictly an adult only zone, children from the age of three can get involved in the joy of baking. And here’s how they can help…
Please note that we always recommend an adult is present for baking adventures. From the age of 12 children may be independent enough to make basic recipes themselves.

3 years old
From the age of three children will start role playing and modelling themselves on those around them. Set them up on a stool so they can reach the bench, and discuss the safety aspects of doing so. They can help to pour pre-measured ingredients into a bowl and try their hand at mixing with a spoon that’s suitable for smaller hands – even just a few turns of the spoon will help them to feel a part of it. When it’s time to roll out the dough, task them with a small piece and a cutter to make shapes.
And make sure they’re involved in the decorating – everyone knows that the most fun comes from sprinkling (or pouring!) hundreds and thousands and M&Ms, over the biscuits (and the bench…).
4-5 years old
They can now help to measure out amounts; 1 teaspoon, 1 cup, and use maths to count out what they need.
6 years old
By this age children will be starting to understand basic fractions and that ½ teaspoon x 2 makes 1 teaspoon – which you can turn into a game while baking. They can start to weigh grams on the scales, mls with the measuring jug and set the oven timer.
From 7 years
As their competency grows, encourage development with more responsibility – working up to the all important cracking of the egg! Our lovely friends over at Melissa and Doug have a great post on ‘cracking an egg like a pro’ for guaranteed shell-free batter.
12 years and up
From the age of 12, many children will be able to bake with friends or on their own. We recommend starting with simple biscuits or scones and making sure they are very well versed in oven safety. While it’s important to give independence, stay close by for the first few bakes in case there are any questions!
And once the kitchen is tidied and the biscuits enjoyed, the baking buzz can continue in make-believe kitchens everywhere, with a little imagination and our wonderful Le Toy Van Honeybake Mixer Set.
Do you enjoy baking with you little ones? We’d love to know which part or baking they enjoy the most!
Until next time,
The Love to Learn Team.
Xx
